To the one we are an aroma…2 Corinthians 2:16

Our Scripture reference today informs us we are going to smell really bad to some people. To people who are avoiding or resisting becoming disciples of Jesus we smell like death. The smell of Christ on us reminds them they need to change their ways and they are not willing to do so.

To those who are seeking a life change we smell really good. Many of these people have realized the road they are on is a dead end and they are looking for a way to take a new path. Through hardship, broken dreams, or hopelessness etc. the Holy Spirit begins his work of conviction so the change we represent smells really good.

When people recognize the smell of Jesus on us the work of discipleship begins and we need to be prepared for a long journey and hard work. We may smell good but the seeker may not be ready or want to make a complete change which will require confession of sin, death to self, and surrender to Jesus Christ. Following the example of Jesus we must meet them where they are. We need to be the fragrance of Christ in their world. Remember, Jesus was accused of spending time with sinners and tax collectors.

Discipling someone requires us to start where they are and to lead them on a journey of becoming a disciple of Jesus. Sadly, when a seeker decides to be a disciple of Jesus many of us think the job is done. In reality, the work has just begun. The novice disciple needs to be mentored and coached in how to repeat the process of discipleship with someone else.

Discipleship often starts with friendship, then to evangelism, then to guiding them on a path of being a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. In the process they also begin to smell like Christ and if we have done our job well they will be equipped and ready to invite someone else on a pathway of becoming a disciple.

Being a disciple-maker is not for the faint hearted or the uncommitted. Making disciples who make more disciples is hard work. Unfortunately, there are many many Christ followers who have never been challenged or trained to be disciple-makers. Thanks for being part of a team that is working to change this so every Christ follower becomes a disciple-maker.
