But even if he does not, we want you to know (Daniel 3:18)

Nevertheless, they faced many challenges and without a doubt the most difficult was having to choose between being true to their faith or worshipping the king. Before the king they declared their loyalty to God and his ability to save them. Then they made this most amazing statement:

"But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

How did these young men kept their faith alive while living and working in a hostile environment? I am guessing it was because they were brought closer by their shared experiences and hardships and they regularly bolstered the faith of each other so that in a time of testing they stood strong together. I am reminded of this verse from Ecclesiastes 4:12:

"A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

In the quiet of their dormitory they most likely talked fondly about life back in Israel. As young Israelite men they had probably memorized great portions of the historical and prophetic writings which they now recounted to each other. A strong bond developed among them which would stand the test of being threatened with death by fire in a furnace.

In the account of Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego we find a strong recommendation for discipleship groups where participants grow and learn together. In these settings, bonds of friendship are established and faith affirming discussions take place. Vibrant discipleship groups also prepare participants to handle well the inevitable challenges and struggles in life.
